CHAPTER TEN

Sasha tucked the pamphlet from the software company into her swag bag, mentally filing it away for later. Her current membership system worked perfectly well, and she saw no need to mess with a good thing. Still, she made a point of visiting every vendor at these events and accepting whatever freebies they offered. No sense seeming ungrateful.

The annual Sweat Summit closed The Beat Box for one day each year. The only other time it closed was on Thanksgiving and Christmas. It allowed Sasha, Taylor, and now Marcy to attend different speaking sessions and compare notes on anything useful. The summit also provided online access to video of every session after the fact. That way if any talk seemed too valuable to miss, the others could catch up on their own time.

“Did you see the treadmill over there?” Taylor pointed in the direction of a company Sasha didn’t recognize. “It’s like the wildest thing I have ever seen. I’m not a runner, but I might be if I had that thing.”

Sasha had no plans to purchase new equipment at the summit. And if she did, a high-tech treadmill would be the last item on her list. Her clients came for tried-and-true kickboxing and weight training, not futuristic cardio machines.

The Beat Box housed little electronic equipment. Not for any lack of belief in technology, but simply because Sasha knew that different methods motivated different clients. What ignited one person's passion for fitness fell flat for another. She focused on the training techniques most likely to inspire her particular members.

For Sasha, success meant giving her clients the power and skills to push their bodies and minds in new ways. She cared more about persistence and progress than the latest fitness fads. While electronic aids might appeal in theory, her hands-on approach had always served her clients—and her business—best.

If it wasn't broken, she felt no need to fix it. Especially not by investing in expensive machinery that might gather dust after the novelty faded. The heart of The Beat Box remained its sense of community and support. As long as Sasha could continue cultivating that, her gym would thrive with or without the latest treadmill technology.

“You can buy it for your own house.”

Taylor wrinkled her nose. “Right. It’s like five thousand dollars.”

“Five thousand dollars? You’ve got to be kidding me.”

“It’s state of the art.”

“Well then, Picasso better have designed it. Have you seen Marcy?”

When they arrived, Marcy took off like a kid in a candy store, darting from vendor to vendor. She seemed to know a lot of the people there. Sasha guessed she knew them through her social media channels.

“Looks like she's over chatting with the Ringside Boxing Academy crew.”

Sasha's heart sank. Ringside posed her biggest competition, drawing primarily male clients while The Beat Box catered to women. Though Sasha welcomed men, she knew that demographic flocked to Ringside. And she understood why. Their toxic attitude often intimidated and disrespected the very women Sasha sought to empower.

Sasha founded The Beat Box to provide a safe space for women in the sport.
